'Parade'. 1985. Mixed Media Installation.
Parade is the
name of the first of three large composite banner
installation works, the others being 'The
Maze Whirlpool' (1990-present) and 'Inside
the Kerbstones' (1992).
It consists of a series
of 5 large double-sided paintings in the form of marching
banners and is painted with an interacting narrative linking
the imagery on the cloth to the 3 dimensional supports. The supports consist of sculptural attachments ranging from hand carved wooden replica weapons, some also cast in alluminium, to an adapted fiddle and hand made drum and an oar and wooden spade and a judges wig.
Parade was only ever completely exhibited at the Independent
Artists 25th Exhibition at the Guinness Hop Store in Dublin
in 1985, however selections were exhibited in the Arts Council
Gallery Belfast 1985 and in 'Directions Out' at the Douglas
Hyde Gallery Dublin 1987.
